Farewell to Juliet

Echoes of Laughter

Adam's Chain

(Schmale)

i look above me
feel the rain
look behind me
adam's chain

look above me
golden sky
all around me
angels cry

there beside me
sits a man
holding paper keys
from many lands

and he tries them
one by one
he says, "unify"
the chain holds on

coming toward me
a spotted lamb
holding paper keys
from many lands

put down your cross
and follow me
forget the chain
i've got the keys

he continues
the other way
i look behind and see the zipper
running down his woolen gray

so i sit down
under a tree
and i remember as a child
sitting on my father's knee

and he told me
about the wind blowing hard
and the rain pouring down
and the chaim

and he told me
about a man i should know
said he walked in this world
a long long time ago

"and people say
he once stretched out his hands
and he stopped the wind and the rain
and he broke the chain."

so i hit the ground running
against the wind and the rain
i pick up the chain and i look at the sky
and i cry out
where are you
who are you
what can i say
what can i do

i've tried all the keys in this world
and i've heard all the news
do i have to give up my shoes
do i have to give up a meal
do i have to look like a fool
do i have to sit stay and heel

i fall on my knees
i hold up the chain
and i say, "all i want is you."

and the chain cracks
