Review of Ping's No Outlet
by John J. Thompson
Jeff Elbel has been quietly churning in the background for years. Sure, his band Farewell To Juliet released two amazing albums, and his side project Sunny Day Roses was cool. Yeah, he played bass for LSU and EDL and probably other initialed bands. And yeah, through his labor of love indie label Marathon he has released some of the coolest stuff ever. But it is here, in the context of a fully realized modern art rock epic that many will start to realize what a treasure this cat is.
No Outlet tells a story, both through the narrative of a "concept" that I won't spoil for you, and through a musical layering effect that will send Pink Floyd fans into deep-bliss arrhythmia. Seriously, any fans of complex but hooky rock ala Radiohead, Blur, Spacehog or even Kansas should get this indie disc immediately.
