Sunny Day Roses The band's musical palette is broad; guitar oriented modern rock finds room for college and progressive rock influences too numerous to mention (Rush , Peter Gabriel , Gypsy Kings , and Parliament Funkadelic teeter at the tip of the iceberg), and stretches to further include strokes of jazz, latin, and other world beat styles. Lyrics which tend to the reflective and artistic are delivered with passion and energy.
The west coast based quintet's singer, London-raised
Suki Chaney, is
an art and
design student at Cal State Dominguez Hills. While respectful of popular
trends ranging from the waifish soprano to the gritty, heartland rocker styles,
Chaney commands a rich voice and dynamic singing style all her own - soft and
silky smooth one moment, tearing the roof off the next.
The rhythm section of fretted/fretless modern rock bassist
Dave Pinkston and jazz-schooled drummer
Jonathan Edwards is a powerful team. The two lock
into their groove
skillfully, and rock hard. The pair can shift gears at a moment's
notice, sending an unexpecting song careening in an entirely new
direction.
Lead and rhythm player Lewis Richey is a dedicated student of the
guitar, and of popular music in general. He brings a wealth of
performing experience to the band, gained during time spent with
L.A. based Pour.
Rounding out the Roses is the sonic bed of the group, rhythm and
texture guitarist Jeff Elbel. Elbel, previously of modern
rock act
Farewell to Juliet,
hails from the school of such rhythm players as
Brian
Futter of Catherine Wheel and Jim Moginie of Midnight
Oil , for whom the vibe is everything.

Edwards and Richey grew up together as children in missionary families in Latin
America. The two later became associated with Pinkston through several L.A.
based pick-up bands. Chaney first met Elbel's wife, Melinda, in a Cal State
classroom. Elbel and Edwards met in 1993 and began collaborating on various
musical ventures as the pieces of Sunny Day Roses fell into place around them.
Pinkston, the newest Rose, joins the band following touring stints with
Boettler and Exit Montana.
