Knockin' Down the Walls
I've wished all my life for a big red bucket. Everyone I admire has a great big, bright, shiny red bucket that can hold so many more marbles than my old blue bucket. And the red buckets last forever.
The thing about these huge red buckets is that they're practically impossible to find, and so many people want them.
You can work your whole life for a red bucket. You can do all the things other people with red buckets do to get a red bucket, and you can still not get a red bucket.
Usually, you have to know people with other red buckets to get a red bucket of your own. Plus, you have to be devoting your existence to nothing but the pursuit of that red bucket. But even that's no guarantee.
A thing about people that do have red buckets is that while it's really easy to get them to show you their red bucket, you almost never get to look into them and see their marbles.
I've often wondered what it would be like to stare into one of those big red buckets, and see hundreds and hundreds - no, thousands - of the most beautiful marbles ever. Aggies, cats eyes, solids; all the colors of the rainbow and then some.
Well, I spent so much of my time looking for a red bucket that I've finally met a couple of people who actually own them!
After a long time, I actually even got to look to look inside one. I tell you, my heart was pounding so hard I could hear it in my ears. I looked, and...
Well, the guy had no more marbles than I did. I thought a couple of mine were even nicer.
And you know what they say about those big red buckets never wearing out? This one already had a crack around the edge in the bottom. Just like my blue bucket. Not as big as the one in mine, maybe, and it didn't really show from the outside, but it was there.
So, I guess I still think those red buckets are pretty darn cool, and I'd still really love to have one of my own, but I think I understand now that maybe it's not quite as big a deal as I used to think. I can hold all of my marbles here in my blue bucket. There are even things I can do with my blue bucket that might be tough to do with a really big red bucket.
Not that the opposite isn't true, of course; I'm still going to keep looking for a red bucket, but...
In the end, it's probably not all that bad just to be part of the brigade.
