Music and Guitars and Amps, Oh My!

Once upon a time I actually spent several hours a day playing guitar. (Most people weren't too sure about my Hagstrom, but when I compared how it played and its price to theirs, I didn't care!) I got halfway decent at it. Then I got into the software world, and time became scarce. Then my wife and I had children, and time became scarcer. So for ten years I maybe played with the guitar one or two hours per year (that's right, per year). I sold my main amp and stuck with an ancient Kalamazoo Model One.

After moving to Austin, I got a good deal on a Peavey Heritage VTX and took it. It is capable of producing Armageddon volume levels indoors, but it sat, mostly idle, for a few years. In late 1998 I finally started really playing again. About that time my son, Josiah, (who was about to turn 11) asked for an electric guitar for Christmas. I found a great deal on a BC Rich ST Platinum through a friend on the net, gave him the Kalamazoo, and for a while we tried to jam 2 or 3 nights a week, but he gave up on guitar for now.

In early 2005 I decided it was time to get some guitars closer to what my amp customers were playing; I needed a Gibson with two humbuckers and a Strat. I found the perfect Strat (except for the color, sea foam green), a mid 70s guitar in good condition that played and sounded like a dream. I went home to discuss it with my wife. The next morning it was sold. I found an Epiphone Goth 1958 Flying V and a cherry burst G&L Legacy Tribute Premium (the Strat evolves!) that I fell in love with, at very reasonable prices. The V is perfect for metal, and does a good job for most styles of rock. I am thinking of getting some more classic sounding pickups. My only beefs with the Legacy are that the #2 and #4 switch positions lose some tone with the "humbucking" feature and that the whammy bar falls off too easily. Otherwise, I love my guitars. The V is very light, too.

I'm no Eric Clapton. I figure that on a scale of 1 to 10, I'm back up to about a 2 (at my best I was maybe a 3). I don't care, I love it.

Finally, I'm happy to be able to put Mook's (and others') Taste Tests for Tubes to the web. Thanks to all who contributed, especially Mook (Kevin Miller), for all the work, and permission to post these here!

Music - it's good for what ails ya.
